Kicked Out of the Club For Life

John D. Duncan holds the distinction of becoming the first attorney to be disbarred for life in the state of Maine.  Disbarment for life, the most severe professional sanction, followed close on the heels of Duncan’s guilty plea to criminal theft charges.  Duncan admitted to stealing $300,000 from clients and his law firm over a ten year period.

Generally, disbarred attorneys are allowed to apply for reinstatement with the state after five years.  However, as Duncan is barred for life, he will be prohibited from applying for reinstatement.  Since Maine’s disbarments are recognized in other states, Duncan will not be able to go to another state and apply for a license as well.
